    FAQs: Polish Residence Card Application

01 How long is a temporary residence card valid in Poland?
Usually up to 3 years, but it depends on why you're applying - whether it’s for work, studies, running a business, or joining family. Just keep in mind: it can’t be extended, so you’ll need to reapply if you want to stay longer.
02 What’s the difference between a temporary and permanent residence card?
Temporary = time-limited and purpose-based. Permanent = long-term stay without worrying about expiration for a decade. You’ll need to meet specific requirements like years of living in Poland before you’re eligible for the permanent one.
03 Can I work legally with a temporary residence card?
Yes, as long as your card was granted for work or business. It gives you full legal rights to work - no extra permits needed.
04 How long does it take to get a Polish residence card?
That depends on the office, but typically around 2–3 months for a temporary card. Permanent cards can take longer, sometimes up to 12 months, so it’s good to plan ahead.
05 Is the residence card enough for travel within Europe?
Yes! You can freely visit other Schengen countries for up to 90 days within any 180-day period. For longer stays elsewhere, you’ll need a visa from that country.
06 What about my spouse or kids - can they join me?
Absolutely. If you hold a valid residence card, your family members can apply to live with you in Poland under family reunification rules.
07 Do I need a work contract to apply?
If you're applying based on employment - yes, you’ll need a valid contract. But there are other options too: if you’re studying, running a business, or joining family, different rules apply.
08 What’s the deal with PESEL and address registration?
Both are important. You need a registered address in Poland to apply, and most cases require a PESEL number (your Polish personal ID). Don’t worry - we’ll help set those up.
09 What happens after my card expires?
You’ll need to apply again from scratch. It’s best not to wait too long - start the process a few months in advance so you don’t risk overstaying.
10 Can I apply while I’m still abroad?
Not for most residence cards. You usually need to be in Poland legally first - on a visa or under visa-free travel - before you can apply at your local voivodeship office.
